Bridgestone proceeds with popular mountain bike stage race, now open to runners and riders alike, in Magaliesburg

JOHANNESBURG, 19 April 2021Bridgestone Southern Africa (BSAF) is confident that the annual Bridgestone Route 66 MTB Experience will be as popular as ever as it kicks off for its 11th year in a row on 16 April 2021 in Magaliesburg.

Considered the most popular stage race in Gauteng, the three-day event will have something for everyone, including a gruelling three-day race from Kloofzicht Lodge to Happy Acres, finishing at Valverde Eco Hotel for serious competitors, as well as two-day races for hardcore and light riders. Those who can only make it on Sunday will have a choice between a 45 km course for weekend warriors and a “fast and furious” 60 km circuit. For the first time, Route 66 will include trail runners and walkers, opening up the event to family and friends.

“The biggest attraction of the race is that it offers something for a variety of riders and runners, from intense athletes to teens and even the elderly,” says CEO at Bridgestone Southern Africa Jacques Fourie. “When we first launched the event in 2011, we wanted to give athletes an opportunity to prepare for events taking place later in the year, such as The Cape Epic, the Great Kei Trek and Joberg2C.”

Usually hosted during February, Route 66 was moved to April this year due to Covid-19 requirements and precautions, so organisers could ensure that employees, participants, and a very limited contingent of spectators are kept safe.

In 2020, the event attracted over 500 riders, but this year participants will be limited to 250 over the entire weekend, including 150 riders and 100 runners. As the various races will start and end at different times, there will never be more than 250 people in a space at the same time.

A Covid compliance officer will be on site to ensure that processes are adhered to, and support crew will be at hand to ensure that food and drinks vendors operate smoothly.

To limit overcrowding further, and in response to limited parking, attendees will also have access to shuttle and chauffeur services. They can choose to be transported to the race start venue via bus or have their private vehicles driven to the finish line where they can collect them.

“While spectators will be restricted, enthusiasts will be able to follow the action every step of the way through extensive coverage on the major broadcasters and live social media,” Fourie says. “South Africans are eagerly looking forward to a full return of their favourite sporting events and activities after an extremely limited year in 2020.”

The race is not just for athletes and leisure riders, but involves development programmes, such as the Exxaro Riding Academy and the Bridgestone Academy, which identify riding talent in various communities around the country, bringing riders as young as 15 years old to compete against the veterans.

This, along with the local Magaliesburg population employed at the event, will serve to expand the reach of mountain biking to a wider population, opening the doors to new participants in various aspects of the sport.

“Sports and its potential to change people’s lives is very close to our heart,” says Fourie. “As is captured in the message of Bridgestone’s support of the 2021 Olympic Games taking place later this year, sports have the power to inspire people to chase their dreams, no matter what.”
