Bridgestone boosts wildlife art contest

Aug 17, 2015

Bridgestone's ongoing sponsorship of the Cape Leopard Trust recently took a creative twist when the Trust's annual children's art competition was held at Splash Cafe in Claremont, Western Cape.

The competition explored the theme of 'Predators of the Cape' and drew submissions from over 80 budding young artists.

"I was impressed at the number and standard of the submissions," said Bridgestone's Anele van der Merwe, who was on hand at the event as the sponsor's representative. "It is important for future conservation that the younger generation is aware of the quality and diversity of South Africa's wildlife."

The brief for the judges of the competition was to select 14 artworks for inclusion in a professionally-printed 2016 Cape Leopard Trust calendar. The diversity of the artworks submitted gave the judges a tough task, with the range of animals including meerkats, the great white shark, scorpions, spiders and secretary birds as well as numerous owls. Leopards of all shapes and sizes were abundant too.

It wasn't just the prestige of winning which was at stake: the prize for the winners is a stay for themselves and a friend at the popular Cape Leopard Trust wilderness camp in the Cederberg.

"The judges were pleased to see the children exploring a broad spectrum of predators, and I know they had a tough time choosing the winners," van der Merwe said. "I think the 2016 Cape Leopard Trust calendar is going to be one to remember!" she concluded.
