The South African Guild of Motoring Journalists' annual Motoring Journalist of the Year and Photographer of the Year competition has this year again attracted entries from the very best in the field of motoring journalism and motoring photography. With a range of highly competitive entries across different media, the results this year were closer than ever before, with only the smallest of margins determining the winners at the end of the day.

Lance Branquinho, formerly of the motoring website Wheels24 and currently a senior writer at Top Gear South Africa, was this year judged to be South Africa's Motoring Journalist of the Year, delivering work of outstanding quality and taking top honours in three categories: Motoring Magazines, Motoring Internet and Motorsport Internet. The judges praised Lance's detailed yet balanced style and great use of language, some considering it proof that much can be said in a few well-chosen words. "Both entertaining - one does not expect less from a Top Gear journo - and highly informative. This is motoring journalism of the highest calibre," they concluded.

It was a particularly special evening for Branquinho as he also won this year's Steve Dlamini Excellence Award, sponsored by Bridgestone South Africa. This award, conceived in honour of the late Steve Dlamini, aims to honour outstanding work by individuals who have been members of the SAGMJ for less than five years. Lance received a trophy for this achievement as well as a R10 000 cash prize from Bridgestone South Africa.

Photographer, Seagram Pearce, scored his first win as Photographer of the Year in this prestigious competition subsequent to taking top honours in the Motoring Photography category and being commended in the Motorsport Photography category. "This photographer's work is not only meticulously executed, but his sublime appreciation of light, often coupled with substantial movement, makes his images a pleasure to behold," noted the judges. "A clear winner"

Pearce also walked away with the inaugural Carlie Norval Photograph of the Year Award, presented to the photographer of the most memorable photograph of the year in honour of the late Carlie Norval, who passed away unexpectedly on June 1st this year. Pearce takes home a special trophy and certificate, as well as R1 000 cash from the special prize fund.
