The Mercedes Benz G-Xtreme Team's son and father combination of Marco (driver) and Joe (navigator) Marincowitz, driving a Mercedes Gelandewagen, are the champions of the 2011 Bridgestone South Africa 4x4 Fundi Challenge. They beat 29 other competitors in the two-day finale of the popular seven-event competition at McCarthy's Rhino Park 4x4 track and trail near Johannesburg and walked away with the crown and a cheque for R15 000 each sponsored by Cross Country Insurance.

Second and third places went to members of the Isuzu Off Road Club. Johan Terblanche and partner Marlene Muller were second in an Isuzu Double Cab and shared a R20 000 voucher for off-road equipment sponsored by Front Runner.

The final place on the podium went to the husband and wife combination of Robert and Leehein Hale in an Isuzu Trooper. Their prize was a GPS each sponsored by Boltons GPS Warehouse as well as a 45-litre stainless steel off-road fridge sponsored by SnoMaster.

The Mercedes Benz G-Xtreme Team (previously known as the Gelandewagen Club) won the club spirit award ahead of the 4x4 Community Club and the Lichtenburg 4x4 Club.

The Bridgestone South Africa 4x4 Fundi Challenge was introduced in 2006 as a competition for standard production 4x4 vehicles and became so popular that it went national in 2009; this year becoming a MSA sanctioned event. It was born out of the establishment of the Bridgestone 4x4 Fundi programme in 2004, a unique initiative to train dealer sales staff in all aspects of 4x4 tyres and off road driving.

The Bridgestone Fundi has become a legend in its own right, according to the 4x4 Adventure Club's Alan Goodway, who was one of several people who Bridgestone recognised for their efforts to promote responsible off road driving and who were appointed Bridgestone Ambassadors.

"This unique, family-oriented competition has brought together 4x4 off road clubs across the regions, built new friendships and significantly increased the off road driving skill of each driver in the competition," said Goodway.

According to Mandy Lovell, Bridgestone's public relations manager, one of the key objectives of the 4x4 Fundi Challenge is to position Bridgestone South Africa as a responsible company that cares about the environment and treats it with respect.

Bridgestone South Africa is a subsidiary of Bridgestone Corporation, headquartered in Tokyo and the world's largest manufacturer of tyres and other rubber products. Bridgestone South Africa is an active participant in the global Bridgestone ‘Make Cars Green' campaign.
