Jul 21, 2010

The annual MG Winter Rally, a round of the South African Regularity Rally Association's Firestone Legendary Drives series, was won in Gauteng on Sunday by Chris Andrew and Mike Altona in a BMW 635 CSL with total penalties of 80. Second, on a score of 103, were Bill Dreyer and Stewart McGregor in a Triumph TR7. Robin Ross and Craig Naude came in third in a Ford Cortina with a penalty total of 120.

A record entry of 81 cars, ranging from classic MG and Triumph sports cars to modern multi-valve-engined sedans, tackled the 180-km route that took competitors from the Nooitgedacht Ball and All golf driving range to Magaliesburg and back with a visit to the Cradle of Humankind along the way.

The large entry was spread over the regular and novice classes as well as a special category for blind navigators who compete in the Total Blind Navigators Rally Championship.

Winners of the 18-strong novice class were David and Thomas Beard in a Triumph TR6 with total penalties of 99. Second were ??

The Total Blind Navigators class, supported by 20 unsighted enthusiasts, was won by Pieter van Niekerk and driver Nico Kleyn in a Volkswagen Touran with 71 penalties. Second was Robert Vernon and driver Julie Vernon in a Toyota Avanza with 117 penalties, while third were Johan Groenewald (navigator) and Hennie van Rensburg in a Volkswagen Caddy with 123 penalties.

Chief organiser Roger Pearce declared himself delighted with the big turnout and was particularly pleased with the 18 novice entries received. "Regularity rallying is one of the most enjoyable and inexpensive forms of motor sport and is the ideal way for a family of motoring enthusiasts to spend a Sunday. The idea is to complete a predetermined route at reasonable speeds over good tar roads with the least number of time penalties.

"The objective of our novices class is to attract new people to the sport and this weekend we succeeded beyond our wildest dreams," Pearce added. "This is good for regularity rallying and we expect to see many of the first-timers, who clearly enjoyed themselves, back again. They will be very welcome.

"The new start/finish and prize-giving venue at the Ball and All golf driving range was a great success and very conveniently situated just off the Krugersdorp-Pretoria freeway. Firestone were enthusiastic sponsors who involved themselves in the rally, with staff even competing, and the halfway stop at Supa Quick in Magaliesburg was a great success with the owner and his staff putting on a great spread of food and refreshments for the competitors and officials."
