Bridgestone Cars Road Safety Award

Jul 07, 2008

Prestigious Award For Safety Website

The prestigious Evert van Niekerk Memorial Trophy award for an outstanding contribution towards greater road safety has been awarded to the founder and creator of the Arrive Alive.co.za website, lawyer Johan Jonck, for 2007.

The award is made annually by the S.A.Guild of Motoring Journalists" Bridgestone sponsored Committee for Active Road Safety to recognise significant achievements in the field of road safety.

The nominees for the 2007 award were Johan Jonck, Gideon Cloete, head of Incident Management Systems for N3TC, Con Roux and Andrea Visser, respectively from commercial management and public relations at N3TC and long time safety campaigner Dr. Lawrence Baritt.

Bridgestone/CARS chairman, Gavin Kelly, cited the motivation for making the award to Johan Jonck as his quite exceptional achievement in founding, creating, building and sustaining the outstanding ArriveAlive.co.za website. "His achievement is a product of his commitment to the task, even when faced with initial resistance and no official support. ArriveAlive.co.za is today justly recognised by the road safety sector as well as the thousands of road users accessing it on a regular basis as an invaluable resource playing a meaningful role in improving South Africa's less than good road safety climate," said Kelly.

Gideon Cloete was nominated for his single-minded determination towards improving crash statistics on the N3 Toll Route and specifically reducing the number of fatal crashes, and achieving measurable success in both of these objectives.

Con Roux and Andrea Visser were nominated for showing a broad and passionate dedication to improving road safety across a wide spectrum and for continually demonstrating and proving their own and their organisation's commitment towards making a difference.

Dr.Lawrence Barrit, also a nominee on previous occasions, was again recognised for his energetic and ongoing personal contribution to road safety, including the compilation and direction of the Stay Alert Stay Alive visual inserts regularly screened on television in partnership with Pick & Pay and other sponsors, and his continuing initiatives in reducing both the excessive use and damaging impact of alcohol on our roads.

The Bridgestone/CARS initiative is made up of journalists from the print and electronic media and representatives from key organisations involved in road safety such as the RTMC, the Department of Transport, the Automobile Association, the SA Police Services; NAAMSA, the Road Freight Association (RFA), and the RMI. Apart from recognising worthy contributions by individuals and organisations on an annual basis, the Committee focuses mainly on positively changing the attitude of road users towards safer motoring practices. CARS successfully encourages the ongoing and wider usage of road safety material in all branches of the media.
