Checking Wheel Slip

Checking wheel slip or travel reduction can highlight problems that may be causing considerable horsepower loss. This can be done with two people, a couple of stakes and a piece of chalk or white tape to mark the side of the tyre.

  1. Choose a field with conditions that are typical of the work that you do. The tractor is to be operated in the same gear and throttle setting as usual.
  2. Make a reference mark on the side of one of the drive tyres with chalk or tape.
  3. With the tillage tool in the ground and the tractor travelling at normal field speed, place the first stake in the ground at the spot where the mark on the tyre meets the ground.
  4. Walk alongside the tractor, counting 10 revolutions of the tyre. (WARNING! Walk outside the path of the implement.)
  5. Use the second stake to mark the spot where the tyre mark again meets the ground on the 10th revolution.
  6. With the tillage tool out of the ground (no load), drive the tractor in the same gear and throttle setting over the distance between the two stakes. (Do not drive in the previously worked ground.) Count the number of drive tyre revolutions to cover the staked distance, estimating the last revolution as closely as possible.
  7. Calculate slip as follows:
    %Slip = [(Loaded Revs - 'No Load' Revs)/Loaded Revs] X 100
    Example:If 9.0 revolutions occurred during the 'No load' run, the % slip would be:
    %Slip= [(10-9)/10] X 100 = 10%
