Bridgestone SA new HR Director Julia Modise leads transformation

As Bridgestone South Africa seeks to re-engineer the business for 21st-century economy, newly appointed Human Resources (HR) Director Julia Modise is ready to bring this vision into reality.

Appointed in April 2020, she forms part of the company’s objectives to build a diverse high performing experienced leadership team to drive the company’s vision for success in the coming years.

“Over the past year, we have started redefining our overall strategy in three key areas namely sales, production, and culture, leveraging modern technology across every touch point,” says Bridgestone South Africa CEO Jacques Fourie. “Driving business and culture transformation is one of our key strategic objectives and building an executive team with diverse backgrounds, industry experience and a proven track record in their respective fields will contribute significantly to the objective of driving business transformation.”

Julia is a seasoned HR Professional with 22 years of experience, having held HR leadership roles at an executive level for the past 12 years. She has international experience working in the USA, as well as in sub-Saharan African operations of multinationals and South African organisations. Her broad industry experience spans retail, manufacturing, listed property, media and entertainment and business consulting. 

In the early years of her career, Julia worked as an HR specialist for companies such as Edcon and the South African Revenue Services before joining Cummins Inc. At Cummins, she rose up to HR Manager (Southern Africa) before transitioning to Global HR Ops Excellence in the USA, and eventually as HR Director for the Africa Region.

She joined Goodyear Tyre and Rubber Holdings in 2012 where she was HR Director for Sub-Saharan Africa, later she joined Growth Point Properties in 2015 and served as Head of HR. At Multichoice South Africa in 2017 she held the position of HR general manager. 

After a twenty-year career in Human Resources, she ventured into executive search and leadership advisory, and joined Spencer Stuart, a global Leadership Advisory firm. Having gotten a glimpse of the unique world of executive search and leadership advisory, Julia decided to go back to the corporate environment and joined Bridgestone as HR Director. 

Her academic background includes a post-graduate diploma in Leadership from Stellenbosch University, a Bachelor of Science Management from Indiana Wesleyan University (USA) and an HR Diploma from Institute of People Management.

Julia comes with a wealth of industry experience at the highest level and believes this has prepared her to help bring Bridgestone through the current pandemic and into a new phase of growth.

“COVID-19 has compelled us to be agile, flexible, to embrace change and make decisive decisions for the safety and wellness of our people and the sustainability of our business,” she says. “We've focused on ensuring employee wellbeing, equipping our leaders with the skills to lead virtually and ensure strong engagement and performance.

“Over the coming year, I will be focusing on building capabilities, driving culture transformation, instilling HR functional excellence and creating a positive employee experience, positioning Bridgestone as an employer of choice,” she says.
