Tyre Costs per KilometreGood tyre maintenance improves original tread life and increases the retreadability of the casing. Total tyre cost can only be determined once the tyre is removed from service. This cost is referred to as cost per kilometre (c.p.k.) and is calculated as shown.

For illustration purposes, the cost of a new tyre is taken as being R1000 and that of a retread as R250
Total cost / Total kms = c p k.
To improve c.p.k., good retreadability is required. To ensure the highest casing standards it is advisable to remove the tyre for retreading when 3 - 4mm of tread remains. Have your retreader mark the number of retreads on your casing so that you do not waste money retreading a casing that is worn out.
Casings should be scrapped when they no longer reduce the c.p.k.
